Lot 1509		1840 $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Lightly toned, some light marks about the obverse rims. Narrow mill. The first to be issued in 1840 had what is known as a Broad Mill with fine edge reeding and wide rims. The later issues (and the majority) known as the Narrow Mill variety display coarse, rather widely spaced edge reeding. Lot 1510		1842-D. Small Date. NGC graded EF-45. Untoned with light handling marks. An early date from this mint, the detail is crisper on Liberty and the eagle than on issues made in the 1850s. However, that is not to say every element is bold, since most of the obverse stars are rounded or slightly indistince; and the date was impressed in to a slightly shallow depth in the die (PCGS # 8210) . Lot 1517		1847-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Lightly toned, golden-orange in color. Slightly more definition on the eagle than is common with Charlotte Mint fives, the chief area of weakness is on the neck feathers and shield clarity, both of which suffered insufficient metal flow into the die recesses. A hallmark of many C as well as D-mint dates in this series. There is a small mark above the eyebrow as well as the usual circulation abrasions in the field and elsewhere, consistent with the grade (PCGS # 8223) . Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600. Lot 1518		1847-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-40. CAC Approved. Nicely toned. The fields lightly abraded from time spent in circulation, with clear details on the main features, the date set high and touching the bust truncation at the 1 and 7. A full C mintmark is present, sharper than most with choice rimes, complete dentils, and a similar lack of noticeable marks to the obverse. Both sides are choice for the given grade (PCGS # 8233) . Lot 1519		1847-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. Well struck and lustrous. Delicately toned. Date logotype has the upper right of 7 barely touching the neck truncation. Logotype punched deeply into the working die, as seems to be the rule for Dahlonega branch mint issues (so that they can be more easily relapped and kept in service longer?). A few light marks on the lower bust and at Liberty's forehead, though plainly above average when it comes to the coin�s attractive surface preservation (PCGS # 8234) . Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000. Lot 1523		1848-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded VF-30. Only 64,472 minted. Lightly toned with moderate circulation from doing its duty in circulation, thereby providing the grease of commerce in the Southern states where these mainly circulated. Some, of course, worked their way to the Northern port cities of Philadelphia, New York, Boston where they were used in payment transfers for overseas imports. Physical gold in the form of bars and struck coins was the chief means of payment around the world in those days (PCGS # 8237) . Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300. Lot 1524		1850-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. A pleasing untoned example. The 1850-C has been regarded as a major rarity in Mint State, this despite its fairly generous mintage of 63,591 pieces. Most extant examples grade VF or EF, occasionally AU, but only rarely Mint State. The present AU53 coin is in acceptable condition and comes with the usual weak strike on the rims and at the centers as well as field abrasions. Pop 16; 63 finer (PCGS # 8244) . Dahlonega, Georgia was opened in 1838 to strike gold coins exclusively. The mint ceased operations when the break came between the Union and the Confederate States of America in 1861. Lot 1532		1856 $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61 CAC Approved. Well struck, bright and sparkling with luster. Representing the 1839-66 No Motto Type. These workhorse $5 gold pieces competed with similar sized European and British gold pieces, such as the gold sovereign in international trade settlement payments. Lot 1533		1856-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53 CAC Approved. A pleasing example and untoned. The 1856-D is one of the scarcer Dahlonega half eagles although its true rarity in higher grades remains to be seen by the presence of small hoard that is slowly being released into the market. The strike is typical for this issue with the obverse showing a slightly convex tendencies. This results in noticeable weakness on the hair around the face and the curl below the ear as well as on the corresponding areas of the eagle and shield. The rest of the detail is very strong with full radial lines in the stars and strong, individually defined denticles. A lustrous coin. Pop 8; 40 finer at NGC (PCGS # 8268) . The 1857-C is a notable rarity in all grades, and even an EF coin will make the advanced collector stand up and nod his head. Specialists will want to bid liberally! (PCGS # 8272) . Lot 1536		1859-C $5 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Well struck, untoned. A scarce Charlotte issue as only 331,847 were minted, mostly seen in lower grades. Pop 16; 95 finer. The reverse strike is typically soft in most places for this date, and high-grade specimens are mainly judged by the overall quality of the obverse. Most of the survivors from that mintage are VF or, at best, EF. Douglas Winter calls the date Rarity-7 in AU preservation, but that has to be modified to Rarity-5 indicating that more than a hundred are known in this grade and higher. The present coin will attract wide attention. The reverse of virtually every known 1859-C half eagle is struck weakly. Many of the known impressions from the die also show evidence of die rust. This same reverse die was used in Charlotte in the following year, 1860, with the same comments regarding the reverse die being appropriate for half eagles of that date as well (PCGS # 8281) . Lot 1537		1859-D $5 Liberty. Medium D. PCGS graded EF-40 CAC Approved. Boldly struck and nicely toned. Some luster. Typical light strike at centers, which 1859-D is noted for. An affordable Dahlonega, Georgia mint issue. This mint ceased operations in 1861 at the opening of the war between the North and the South in April of that year. Only 10,366 were struck. Lot 1538		1861 $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. Well struck and untoned. Popular Civil War issue. Very frosty No Motto issue from the opening year of the Civil War (a.k.a. the War of the Rebellion in the official US two-volume history of the event). The luster on the obverse is virtually undisturbed by surface marks, and the same can be said for the reverse, although there is one noticeable mark at the tip of the arrowhead.
